The MS Outlook PST file grows in size as items are added to the application. When this file is reached to a certain limit, it usually affects the performance of Outlook application. In such situation, it is highly recommend move the old data to another storage file (PST archive) to make room for other data items, and this process is known as “Archiving”. This process can do a little bit of Outlook recovery and enhance the performance of the application.

MS Outlook application provides an option to automatically transfer the old data using a feature known as AutoArchive feature. However, in MS Outlook 2010 this feature is not enabled by default. This article will discuss about step wise method to auto archive in Outlook 2010 application.

Step 1: To turn on or to enable the AutoArchive feature in application, open the application and click on File and then click to Options.

Step 2: Another window of Outlook Options will open up. Here click on Advanced option and then to the AutoArchive Settings button.

Step 3: Another small window of AutoArchive will open up. Here check the option of “Run AutoArchive every … days”. Take care of not checking the “Permanently delete old items” option as it will lead to deletion of old data.

Step 4: Provide the number of days you want to follow the archiving process. Check the required options. “Clean out items older than” option can also be chosen. Provide location of “Move Old Items to” option. And click OK.

Step 1: Right-click on the folder and click on the last option “Properties”.

Step 2: Here go to AutoArchive tab and you can check the settings as per your requirements for that particular folder and click OK.

Conclusion:

Auto-Archiving can also help you keep the PST file size less in order to avoid any future corruption issues. This also helps to enhance the performance of the MS Outlook application. But in some cases it has been noticed that users accidentally keep the Clean Option enabled. In that situation, it is possible that some of the emails can be deleted. Moreover, when there is severe corruption in the PST file, at that time the archiving will not save you from deteriorated performance of Outlook application. In such situations it is recommended to take immediate help of a third party solution like Outlook Recovery which is capable to recover email data from corrupted PST file. It is also capable to recover permanently deleted data using this software.
